TCT x WMING (GAWA) is pleased to present the second part of the exhibition Celestial Thread of the Dragon at Visas Consulting Group Shanghai. This continuation of the exhibition features 12 paintings by Niu Ann from 7 different series that she created from 2005 to 2017. Niu’s works range from large-scale, freeform brushworks to small and delicate depictions. This second part of the exhibition runs from April 16 – July 16, 2018 on historical Huaihai Road Central in the Xuhui District of Shanghai. A detailed exhibition guide is available for visitors in person.
The first part of the exhibition is currently on display in GAWA’s new exhibition space in the Rockbund district of Shanghai, including 23 works by five Chinese contemporary artists: Yang Jiechang, Tang Nannan, Zhao Meng, Niu Ann, and Zhang Shuang. The first part of the exhibition runs from December 9, 2017 – May 30, 2018.
Niu Ann (b.1968) lives in Shanghai and San Francisco. She is a traditionalist as well a contemporary artist who followed her teacher, Xie Zhiliu. Calligraphic lines are the essential gesture in Niu’s works; in calligraphy, she embraces the spirit of freedom from her ancestors as well as western abstract expressionist masters such as Willem de Kooning. At the heart, Niu follows Chinese traditions of figurative paintings and landscapes, and transforms classical figures, landscapes, and Dunhuang mural paintings into a contemporary context. Niu inserts her mobile phone number and other mundane objects into her paintings to connect the flow of the past to the present. This exhibition will feature 7 series of Niu’s works: Soir de Lune, 2016; The Scholar Stones Series, 2016; Guanyin, 2016; Everywhere Series, 2016; Guanyin on the Scholar Stone, 2017; The Lantern Enlighten Series, 2017; and Line of Quality, 2017.
