Yang Jiechang is one of the most distinguished and discussed contemporary artists in China since the Cultural Revolution. He was born in 1956, in Foshan, Guangdong province. Trained in calligraphy and Chinese painting from the 1970s to 1980s， he has expanded his practice to include various media -- painting, calligraphy, installation, performance and video. Through his works that integrate traditional and contemporary form of expression, he contemplates on the traditional Chinese aesthetics and conceptions in our current time. Since the major exhibition Magiciens de la Terre in Centre Pompidou in 1989, he moved to Europe, living between Paris and Heidelberg, became a professional artist.
